How Do You Arrange Your Iphone Icons?

So I’ve had my iPhone for about 3 months now and I’ve loved every minute of it. Hands-down it’s the best device I’ve ever used. One of the biggest draws for me to the iPhone was the number of applications available in the App Store that was better than any other smartphone platform. I think that there are now close to if not over 100,000 Apps available.

With so many options of Apps to use, I’ve been playing around with how to organize all these Apps so that the ones I use most are quickly accessible yet the ones I rarely use are still easy to find in the moment that I need them the most. I’ve tinkered around with two different organization structures. Both of these structures include the same home screen – one that has all of the Apps I use everyday multiple times. First Impressions: Apple Magic Mouse

apple-magic-mouse-4
I just returned from the Apple Store, where I picked up my brand new Apple Magic Mouse. I have only messed around with the mouse for about an hour, but I’m loving it. It does take some adjusting and getting used too because so thin and has a initially weird shape, but as soon as you dive into the features of the mouse, you’ll quickly learn to get used to it. I look into a few main points here.

The Magic Mouse As A Mouse

The Magic Mouse is very cool looking and allows you to use gestures on the top of the mouse, but how does it work as a mouse? After all, that is supposed to be its main function.

I’m happy to say that it is the most responsive wireless mouse I’ve ever used, bar none. I let the computer go to sleep completely and then touched the mouse to wake it up. Not only did the computer wake up right away, the mouse was immediately responding to my movements and clicks.

The were no herky-jerky jumps of the mouse onscreen and I didn’t have to wait for a few seconds before it responded to left- or right-clicks.

The mouse feels really good in your hand too. It’s very light to move around and feels quite natural to do the everyday tasks we have come to rely on a mouse for. Read the rest of this entry »

Could you run your entire business from a smartphone?

Last week, I had what every computer user dreads getting – my Hard Drive Crashed. I was watching a movie, and all of the sudden everything just stopped. I tried to reboot, but my computer didn’t even recognize my Hard Drive. I didn’t panic about losing my data though, as my computer is constantly backing up to Time Machine. (note: BACK UP YOUR DATA CONSTANTLY!) However, I was panicked about how I was going to be able to maintain my business. I had to be go anywhere from 2-10 days without my laptop depending on what the complete problem was, and how long until Apple would be able to turn it around.

Lucky for me, I upgraded to the new iPhone 3G S just 2 weeks ago. This phone is the perfect tool to run your business away from the office (or sans computer). Now a days, thanks to the variety of business apps available in the App Store, I can process a credit card payment, manage my accounting, update my inventory, track shipping, and more: all on my iPhone.

My short experience (luckily only 4 days) brought me to think though -

“Could you run your entire business from a smartphone?”2805473578_ffdbe8cd07_b

It’s certainly easy to run a business from a laptop from anywhere in the world because so long as you have an internet connection you can operate the same as if you were in the office. But would it work running your business from a mobile device all the time? Read the rest of this entry »

Apple Store “Geniuses” not so Genius

So I was in the new Apple Store at Friendly Center today getting my Macbook Pro looked at since it went crazy on Friday and won’t boot up due to kernel panics. After sitting down at the Genius Bar, they took it to be looked at and tested “in the back”, I browsed the store.

So I spent about 10 minutes looking at the new Apple 24″ Cinema Display. Even though the screen is super glossy, I’ve wanted one since they first came out. The only problem is, that would require me upgrading to the new Unibody Macbook Pro because the Cinema Display is only compliant with MiniDisplay ports, which are only available on the new lineup of Macbooks. Apple doesn’t offer and most likely won’t offer adapters in the near future. And I can’t quite force myself to muster up close to $500 or so after selling my current MBP + the $799 for the new Apple Cinema Display (after the $100 education discount wahoo!!!).

The Kernel Panic that displays every time I try and start up my Macbook Pro.

The Kernel Error that displays every time I try and start up my Macbook Pro.

Anyways, while I was looking at the Cinema Display, an Apple “Genius” guy came over, and I just wanted to clarify and make sure that no new adapters had come out for the new Cinema Display. I asked him if I could connect my MBP to it, and he said “Sure. Our adapters are right over here.” He tried to convince me that the Mini-DV is the same as Mini-Displayport. When I challenged him, he asked an associate, who didn’t know. Basically, we went through 7 other Apple “Geniuses” before finally talking to the Manager who answered my question right away.

Note to self and Lesson of the day: next time you walk into an Apple Store and have a question, just ask the manager directly.

Now, maybe I should apply to the Apple Store for a summer job? Sweet discounts, awesome t-shirts, and I would get to sell Mac’s all day. What do you all think?

On that note, what is your ideal summer job?

(Please note, I am still currently looking for a summer internship in Interactive Strategy/Marketing, so if you know of anything, please let me know. My Resume is here.
